PPCD (the Popular Christian-Democrat Party) president Gheorghe Ciuhandu and Christian-Democrat leader Marius Popovici were invited to attend the Extraordinary Congress of the Social-Christian Union in Germany. Anton Niculescu from UDMR (the Democrat Union of Hungarians in Romania), state secretary in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, was member of the Romanian delegation as well. The entire Christian-Social and Christian-Democrat elite from Germany attended the event. Romanian representatives attending the congress expressed satisfaction with the fact that German politicians no longer criticized the state of things in Romania. Marius Popovici told us: "At the Congress I was glad to notice that Romania was no longer an electoral issue. Our country was actually mentioned once, but the terms were not at all negative." He mentioned that after the elections to come in Germany a delegation from PPCD would go to this country for lobby on Romania's accession to the European Union at the time set. (R.G.)
