PNL (the National Liberal Party) president Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced his party would complete a law project including two articles eliminating the two privileges in MPs' status: pension and unemployment subsidy. He said the Liberals were having talks to eliminate privileges for all categories of officials. (...)
PD (the Democrat Party) leader Emil Boc also demanded parliamentary parties for "yes" or "no" to these privileges. He said he wanted the consent of the political class for eliminating such points. He also claimed such an initiative was necessary because of the "unfortunate" relative solidarity in the Parliament. He said the solution was an emergency ordinance suspending such rights and afterwards a law project with reliable parliamentary support to do away with the privileges and "regain people's trust in the political class as well as improve the Parliament's deficit of image." He explained the law had to become a normal one and do away with immoral, unmotivated privileges. Boc warned that if the present version of the status passed as such it could harm Romanian democracy, because of distrust in Parliament and political institutions. (A.M.)
