Last Thursday Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu urgently went to Syria, after having cancelled his visit to Great Britain. The Romanian Minister had a meeting with the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Farouq al-Shara in Cairo and handed him a message from President of Romania Traian Basescu to President of Syria Bashar al-Assad, says Rompres. Official sources from Romania put it for certain that the message referred to the crisis of Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq. During their meeting the two officials took up latest evolutions in the region and focussed mainly on the three Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq.
His visit to Cairo was against the background of Iraqi voices claiming much information on the involvement of Sunnite Syrians in the kidnapping of the Romanian journalists. Minister Ungureanu's visit to Oxford University in London was cancelled because of this urgent visit to Cairo. (D.E.)
