The Romanian Senate committees for foreign affairs and defense are to question Romania's foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu today on the Russian Federation's withdrawal from the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty.
On July 14 Russia announced its decision to suspend affiliation to the CFE. Moscow reproached the North-Atlantic Alliance for not having ratified a version of the treaty as revised in Istanbul in 1999 in order to take into account the ceasing Warsaw Pact. NATO members now refuse to ratify the new version unless Moscow withdraws troops from Georgia and the Moldovan Republic in order to fulfil commitments made in Istanbul. (R.I.P.)
