In his interview to the Ukrainian TV channel on Thursday evening, Romanian president Traian Basescu said he was rather pessimistic about the power of negotiations to settle the dispute on the delimitation of the Black Sea continental plateau, says Rompres. The president explained the problem was an old one, dating back since the Soviet Union. He claimed that international arbitration would be one of the best solutions to settle things. Still he added Romanian and Ukraine would go on with attempts to reach consensus. He also said international expertise was welcome as far as Ukraine's Bastroe project was concerned. As for the latter matter, Romania's interests are not of economic nature, but they are related to the impact on the environment, outlined the president, explaining Romanian gained nothing from exploitation of the Sulina canal, given budget expenses on maintenance.
Basescu mentioned as well: "Transdniestria must obey the authority of the legitimate government in Chisinau again." He outlined how important it was that Russian troops should withdraw from the left bank of the Nistru River. As for the Ukrainian proposal for common exploitation of the energy reserves in the Black Sea, the president mentioned it was to be analyzed with view to economic advantages and added Romania wasn't convinced that continental plateau resources were worth such a great investment.
